Few movies has been so important like Ridley Scott Gladiator and now the same director come with a continuation that isn’t a remake even if it use footage from the impressive titles of the same work but even from an other Scott’s features “Kingdom of heaven” in the impressive battle for the conquest of a Numina Arabic town. Here we will see known the two role that take that rather difficult heritage of Russell Crowe Hanno by the great hero Paul Mescal and especially Accanius by Pedro Pascal. Both take some other aspect of the character that Maximus  so the link withy the earth and a certain amount of democracy that is also appearing from Pascal character . Democracy is a difficult question and Gladiator II is mostly a action movie and one can see it in the use of editing that is taken as it is rather violent way by  Claire Simpson and the use of the elements fire for  Hanno air for his beautiful wife Arishat well portrait by Guval Gonen , muddy for the antagonist and water for Lucilla that is for me connie Nilsen best role ever. This wonderful Danish actress with a touch of Greta Garbo has been deeply under rated and we can watch her in several role when she interact with the two corrupted imperator and with the villain but also a beloved partner to Arcadius and a difficult relationship with Hanno. In a way the scene works much bather than the one that we had in Gladiator and there is a duality that is shown by Nielsen and by Scott excellent instruction in her figure a mother and an empress and this is also shown by the DP John Mathieson. The main problem is that we don’t have any interest scene between Lucilla and the senator Gracco  that is play buy Derk Jacobi but his part seam that of a figurant nothing more. The emperors are the most astonish character I all Ridley Scot’s movie career for the way how they are presented . They are very expressionist like some character of the German movie Caligari for example (I will soon dedicate an other English review on this movie) that are present like the soul at work. This is particular present in the figure of Caracalla paly by Fred Hechinger but in  rather clownish way but with Galeta really well play by Joseph Quinn that is a much bather actor and this kind of working is bather and show a man that has the same idea of Rome glory even in a decanter way. The character that is parallel is the notably and deeply corrupt Thenax play by Tim McInnerny. He is also near Marcius portrait in a very good way by Danzel Washington. We cannot find him like purely evil and we can easily understand why he act as he act and the way of revenge against marc Aurelio-. The battle scenes are like the duel highly spectacular and what I like is the use of the baboon. They were actually find in Pompei and . An other quality is the character of Rami play by the Swedish Eritrean actor Alexander Karim a former gladiator that is known to be a doctor. He is the only of the “gladiator” that have a more psychological connection with Hanno a really good movie.
