Interview with Mats Reinhardt

A German in Russian movie

Batljon is a really good movie and one of his qualityisthe german actor Mats Reinhardt

hat have answer to some of my question.  the movie was shown here in Sweden thank to Transcine and Jelena Milla

How did you get inside this Russia productive how always the audience?

: How I got inside the russian productin? I think in the end it was just a lucky coincidence: The production company was looking for a german actor for this part. (Lieutenant of a german gasbombing unit). They told me later that they were checking the profiles of many german actors and in the end they found me and apperently the liked my pictures and my showreel...

Any of the actress were telling me about the difficulties about the military training av the fact that they were living and had the same kind of training as really solider was it the same for you and the other “German” guy?

As far as I know i was the onliest german actor in this production. The other guy next to me in the scene were we get arrested ( and he killed) is a russian actor.Thats why he doesnt say very much

I did not have any problems with the physical requirements for that character. But of course maybe I was happy because I - as a germen soldier - was not involved in russian military rules that are were required from these batallion-women at that time in that war.

Your character is a bit of a bad guy and he kill the Russian girl quite brutal. I understand it and probably I would have done the same because I would like to be in a Siberian concentration camp but how did you discus on it and how did you prepare this scene ?  '

The scene were I killed that lsmall woman: Well, you are right, when I read the script at home I also felt that this is very brutal. And of course, it is. But when I was at the filmset a few weeks later, these battlefields, I realized that everybody who is sitting in this trenches - no matter if it is a german or a russian soldier - will loose more and more his humanity...The onliest thing that is important to you and the onliest thing you are thinking every moment - while you fear to death all the time - is, that you want to survive this hell and to go home as fast as possible.

...to me was one thing very important in that scene: I ask that woman (in russian) to leave..that she should let me free and that she should go home...nobody would notice that because we were alone...She refused...So I hd to kill her if I want to survive.

Often Germans in war movie of several culture even in Italy they are bad guys in Batljon I think they are only invader how was the movie consider in Germany May be it is a difficult question but what is the main difference between German and Russian film production in the work and the routine?

And there was another aspect, that was very impoetant to me: After she is dead, I ask her again.."why didnT you go home..."?? I think this scene symbolizes the brutality of war and the senseless dying...Everybody would like to go home, but he can't . Because if he did, he /she was a deserter and he would be killed too.Last year I was at the norwegian filmfest in Tromsoe, (for a norwegian movie / second worldwar were I played the lead), and there were also journalists from russia. One of them, a young woman, told me, that her russian mother - who has also seen battalion - wants me to know, that she was very touched by that scene, ans that she wants to say thankyou, that - even the scene was very brutal - the russians didnt only see "the Monster-German", but a soldier who shows empathy to this killed russian woman.

...to be honest..when I heared that, I was deeply touched, too...

how as the Moviebataliojon i germany a big sucess?

The film batallion wasn't shown to a big audience in germany, only in a few special cinemas in original russian version with subtitles.

could you tell me about the differences betwen rusaina n grman production?

The difference between german and russian filmproduction? Well, there is no difference regarding proffesionality and routine. All I met there, actors, crew, director of photography, director, production were 100% professionals and very nice and friendly people.

Could you present yourself for a Swedish public? Have you a favorite Swedish movieor actor ?

...I saw already several svedish films / series in germany, and i loved your criminal-series, above all "Mankells Wallander". I like Krister Henrikssonn very much and I fell in love with Carlotta Jonsson (Unfortunately I never could tell her, but maybe now there is a chance! )

As I already told you I already worked in norway, and it would be a big pleasure to me, probably also to work one day in Sveden... I love this relaxed scandinavian mentality and .

...its people. I hope to work soon in Scandinavia
